This specialty anhydride is mainly as an epoxy curing agent with several applications in coatings and electronics assemblies.
What is Dodecenyl Succinic Anhydride (DDSA)?
Dodecenyl Succinic Anhydride or DDSA is a mixture of long-chained isomers typically used as catalysts or resin hardeners, especially in the electrical industry. This clear, light yellow epoxy curing agent is unique compared to other liquid anhydrides because of its low density and high mix ratio. These properties combined create a system that fills up to 15% more volume per pound, offering more value than similar products.
Its mechanical and electrical properties, when cured, are superior to epoxy resins that are cured with di-amines or polyamides. The final resin exhibits low moisture absorption and enhanced flexibility and toughness. In addition, DDSA can also be used to compound one-component epoxy formulations, and provides an extended pot life of up to twelve months when stored in the right conditions.
The applications of DDSA in electrical potting compounds and related applications
DDSA is typically used as an epoxy curing agent for electrical applications. It’s found in potting compounds and conductive adhesives, as well as syntactic foams and other coatings. DDSA is excellent for potting and encapsulating components such as ignition coils and high voltage transformers. Its high strength makes it excellent for applications that may have to undergo rigorous conditions. As flex and rigid-flex PCBs grow in popularity, the need for a flexible resin to coat and protect them has made anhydrides like DDSA all the more critical.
